Sophia Ainslie
In Person
Nov. 3–21, 2014
Contemporary artist Sophia Ainslie works between drawing and painting, between figuration and abstraction. Her work focuses on the connection between diagnostic imaging technologies and landscape, interior and exterior, and the microscopic and macroscopic. She melds observation with imagination in a way that explores the relationship between movement and space. By pushing the formal aspects present in her work, she gives the negative spaces greater prominence, creating spaces that look like something was once there.
“Art sparks our imaginations and allows us to dream for a moment. I hope my work tickles the imagination—that each time you look at it, you see something new.”
—Sophia Ainslie
Ainslie, a native of South Africa who serves on the teaching faculty of the College of Arts, Media and Design, worked with students to complete a mural in the lobby of Ryder Hall. She incorporated 16 colors into the piece to help represent the relationship between body and landscape, a theme she had previously explored.
Her work has been featured in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa.
